Great movies that ran out of steam before they were over?
There are a bunch of movies out there that started out with a bang, but for whatever reason, ended with a whimper."Stripes" is probably the ultimate example of this.
A great concept (two morons join the Army), amazing comedic actors (Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, John Candy, John Laroquette), and an atmosphere of early-80's stupidity should equal a classic.
Unfortunately, somewhere about 2/3rds of the way in, the flick pretty much dies.
What are some other examples of this sad phenomenon?

PTSD Diagnoses Up 50%
- Records show roughly 40,000 troops have been diagnosed with the illness, also known as PTSD, since 2003. Officials believe that many more are likely keeping their illness a secret.
- "...staff should “refrain from giving a diagnosis of PTSD straight out” and they should “R/O [rule out] PTSD” and consider a diagnosis of “Adjustment Disorder”.
The Headwinds Keep Building for Hill GOP
Beyond the problems with spiking oil/gas prices, Iraq, GOP retirements on the Hill or defending twice as many seats as the Dems in the Senate, they have to look at George W. Bush as their President for another eight months. So not even finding a replacement for Vito Fossella is a real blow. This district in NY is supposed to be safe or at least always contest-able ground for the NY GOP.
Even if Obama loses to McCain, it could be a plus year election for the Dems on the Hill...

Signs of another Democratic tidal wave in the Senate...
In 2006, the Democrats needed to pick up six seats in the U.S. Senate to take control. They did so by picking up seats in red and blue states alike (Missouri, Virginia, Montana, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania).
In 2008, the possibility exists that the Democrats could greatly expand their majority, and maybe even secure a filibuster-proof 60 seats in total.

Also, in maybe the most shocking bit of early polling I've seen, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Lips on Dubya's Ass) is trailing his relatively unexperienced opponent, Bruce Lunsford, by 5 percentage points.
- Democratic challengers are virtual locks to take over Republican-held seats in Virginia, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Colorado.
- Democrats are likely to make very strong runs at seats in Alaska, Minnesota, Oregon, and Maine.
- Further tarnishing of the corrupt Republican brand shows that even GOP-held seats in North Carolina, Texas, and Misssissippi are not safe.
I hope you Republicans enjoyed that run you had from 2000 to 2004, because your time in the political wilderness is just beginning...

- Though they reserve the harshest judgment for professional, do not assume that white people will cast a blind eye to your grammar mistakes in email and official documents. They will judge you and make a general assessment about your intelligence after the first infraction. Fortunately, this situation can be improved if you ask a white person to proof read your work before you send it out. “Hey Jill, I’m sorry to do this, but I have a business degree and I’m a terrible writer. Can you look this over for me?” This deft maneuver will allow the white person to feel as though their liberal arts degree has a purpose and allow you to do something more interesting. Don’t worry, it is impossible for a white person to turn down the opportunity to proofread.

Vive' la Virginia
If one of the VA trio becomes the VP nominee it will likely be Kaine or Webb. Warner is needed too much to get the other Senate seat, which may signal that Webb is not going to be pulled from the Senate. But Webb helps with the demographic that is most in play between McCain and Obama - independent/centrist males. There is little concern that the Senate will tilt more Republican - they are defending twice as many seats as Dems - so Webb may be in play , especially given his legislative victory on his GI bill. (The bill may die/get vetoed, but it's main provisions will pass under this president or the next.)
Personally, I like Kaine or Webb as a VP pick, but would rather see Obama choose KS Governor Sebelius. Just not Hillary...

For the Democrats who, by not uninting soon, seem determined to weaken their own chances this fall. Fortunately:

Finally, some backbone, Part 2...
Sen. Jim Webb's new GI Bill passes the Senate by a 75-22 veto-proof majority.
The Senate overwhelmingly approved a landmark increase in college aid to veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan today.Unfortunately, two big questions loom:
President Bush has promised to veto the legislation, championed by Sen. Jim Webb, a Democrat. But the 75-22 margin, more than the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto, suggests momentum in favor of the Webb bill may be unstoppable.
Along with the enhanced GI Bill, which would provide a monthly stipend for living expenses plus tuition aid equal to the most expensive public college in each veteran’s home state, the legislation approved today provides new aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast.
1.) Will Bush veto it?
2.) If he does, will the 25 Republicans who voted for the bill also have the balls to override their master's bidding?

You read that correctly. The city I was raised to ridicule is not that bad.
It's actually a very cool town, if for no other reason than you can find one of the greatest beer bars in God's creation on the South Side.
It's called Fat Head's, and no only is their beer selection amazing, but their sandwiches are fantastic, too.
I got the South Side Slopes: Kielbasa, fried pierogies, grilled onions, American cheese and horsey sauce. And you thought a trip to the toilet was interesting after a few beers!!!
Oh, and big kudos to the magnanimous Penguins fans that bought me a sympathy beer as well.
Very classy. Cool town you got there...
Finally, some backbone...
To add to the list of administration-generated mythological creatures such as terrorists who hate your Uncle Joe for his freedom, we now have the horrific subsidy-gobbling beast known as the "rich farmer." If you desire to see some of these magical beings, get into your car and drive anywhere east of I-95 this weekend in NC. You can even entertain the whole family by turning it into a game of punch-bug! But I promise you’ll run out of nicely subsidized Saudi-blood before anyone even takes the first swing.
It’s quite refreshing to see that the same people who didn’t seem to bat an eye to provide funds to (insert designation here) militiamen for the expediencies to build a better IED somehow decided that food stamps for my nephew might be a noteworthy cause to fight for. Aye, this bill does indeed have loopholes just like essentially every bill passed in the history of US legislation. But it also ensures that the next time something we haven’t declared a war on for purposes of funding occurs, like floods or droughts or late frosts, that the rich bastard making less than $20,000 a year on five acres of soybeans won’t have to join the ever-growing "Hey I just Foreclosed My Home Too!" club. Oh yeah, and we might not starve to death or wind up forking over $20 for a head of cabbage.
Bravo, my elected representatives. I join you in a salute to the commander-in-chief and the wannabe who said he would have voted against it (hint: this gesture does not indicate you are #1...) But alas, a 34 page paper SNAFU is probably going to once again demonstrate your ability to snatch a defeat from the jaws of victory.

How many Korans are destroyed when a mosque is car-bombed? Shooting an inanimate object is more offensive/newsworthy than lobbing mortars into Baghdad neighborhoods and disemboweling children while they are playing soccer?
It’s quite amazing CSI: Sunni Triangle can uncover this “atrocity” yet somehow not detect who is going to lay down their rifle and run in Basra. Marching out a 2-star to do the required ankle-grab will obviously uncork the goodwill geyser from the locals. Anyone willing to wager we’ll see a story within 10 days that some mindless obscenity will be committed in retribution for this “outrage”?
Based on command response, if I were some weekend-warrior ground-pounder on tour #3, I’d be looking for a “skeet-version” of the book. And what an easy out we really just gave ourselves – think of the headline:

We have witnessed tonight a momentous election with far-reaching implications for the country -- in Mississippi, where the Associated Press is projecting that Democrat Travis Childers has won the special election for the open GOP House seat.The Republicans even flew in Deadeye Dick Cheney to campaign for their loser candidate...to no avail.
With 90% reporting, Childers leads 52%-48% -- and with the strongholds for GOP candidate Greg Davis mostly in, and some of Childers' stomping grounds still out. And all of this happened in a district that went 62%-37% for President Bush in 2004.
Democrats now enjoy a 235-199 majority in the House of Represntatives, far more than the Republicans ever enjoyed in their 10 years of control...

Immigrants of the past quarter-century have been assimilating in the United States at a notably faster rate than did previous generations, according to a study released today.
Modern-day immigrants arrive with substantially lower levels of English ability and earning power than those who entered during the last great immigration wave at the turn of the 20th century. The gap between today's foreign-born and native populations remains far wider than it was in the early 1900s and is particularly large in the case of Mexican immigrants, the report said.

The Battle of Pennsylvania begins tonight, and it's going to be a best-of-seven brawl.These teams (and cities, for that matter) hate each other with a passion. It's so bad that even their AHL affiliates have engaged in a bitter, bloody rivalry for years.
If you're a fan of old-school physical hockey with lots of hard hits and fights, get ready. You're going to see both in abundance for at least four games in the NHL's Eastern Conference Finals.

What a misguided dog shit idea this is:
"Pro-family" organizations and members of Congress are continuing the push to limit the range of reading materials available to members of the military.Honestly, is there anyone in the world who deserves the right to run the occasional batch more than the American soldier???
House Rep. Paul Broun (GA-10), with 15 co-sponsors and the support of organizations such as the Alliance Defense Fund and the American Family Association, recently introduced a bill that would strengthen the ban on sales of adult-themed publications on U.S. military installations.
Multiple, extended tours...Two wars in the Middle East going poorly...A lack of equipment and body armor to protect them...and, GASP!,the horror of being exposed to naked breasts in a Playboy magazine!!!

One more war wasting our money...
Did the Federal government really need to infiltrate and then subsequently raid a campus in southern California near to Tijuana to discover kids on a campus of 35,000 in a major metropolitan city are using and have access to – gasp- DRUGS?
The residents of La Jolla are surely sleeping much better knowing that the Draconian Enforcement Agency has prevented little Billy from toking up in the dorm room anymore. The best quote of this story pertained to the purchases that tactically placed agents made:
"All it took was saying, `Hey, I go to State, can you hook me up?'" said San Diego County prosecutor Damon Mosler. "And then it was off to the races."Obviously there would have been no transactions as discerning dealers would have politely refused if the patrons had been attending a local community college.
Instead of ruining the lives of some 18 year old kids by handing out felony convictions, send them on a field trip just south of the border for a period to observe the real effects of the American drug consumption if the feds are serious about sending a “message.”
But if you really need to see the hypocrisy, check out the “message” that will probably be sent to an actor from one of the manifestations of repugnance known as “CSI.”

My take on one of the best concerts I've ever attended...
What an incredible show!!!
The cynic in me was fully prepared to leave Monday night's Van Halen concert with two primary complaints: 1.) Wolfgang Van Halen is just a kid who wasn't up to the challenge, and 2.) David Lee Roth was a showboating has-been with a horrible voice.
I was wrong on both counts. Wolfie did exactly what was expected of him (I'm not sure what show you were watching, Murali) and then some, and DLR, while certainly a bit of a ham on stage, did an awesome job vocally and made it feel like a bona fide ROCK SHOW.
Eddie was on his game in a way I've never seen in the four other VH concerts I've attended over the years. He checked his personal demons at the door and showed me why his playing was my initial inspiration to pick up a guitar in the first place.
Never was this more evident than when he started the intro to "Mean Street". He was on fire the whole friggin' night!

The Most Clutch NFL Quarterbacks Ever
UPDATE: The NFL Network hit the nail on the head when talking about why Brett Favre was not in their top 10, building on what I said by saying, "Even Packer fans know that for every great Brett Favre moment there was one equally as bad."
We both had Montana No. 1 and Brady No. 3. They did not have Aikman, Luckman or Bradshaw in their list. They went 10, Marino; 9. Steve Young (this Niners fan definitely disagrees with that as I was not impressed with his clutchness); 8. Starr; 7. Graham; 6. Stabler; 5. Unitas; 4. Staubach; 3. Brady; 2. Elway; 1. Montana
The NFL Network is doing an interesting show tomorrow, ranking the top 10 clutch quarterbacks ever. here are my thoughts...if you care...
10. Troy Aikman: What I don't like about Aikman is that he never brought Dallas from behind in any of his playoff games. What I like about Aikman is that he was so efficient that Dallas didn't have to come back in many games from 1992-95. Aikman won 11 of his first 13 playoff games and threw four touchdown passes in his super bowl debut. He is hurt by the fact that he didn't win another playoff game after 1996.
9. Sid Luckman: Likely to be overlooked by many at places like ESPN whose people don't seem to understand that they played football prior to 1970, Luckman was one of the first big-time clutch quarterbacks and made the Bears the team for the 30s.
8. Bart Starr: You don't win five world championships without having a clutch quarterback. Starr was calm under pressure and was at his best in consecutive NFL title wins over Dallas in 66 and 67 bringing the Packers back twice, including in the legendary Ice Bowl when he navigated the Packers on a long, last-minute scoring drive despite playing on what was basically a skating rink.
7. Roger Staubach: Didn't matter how much they trailed by, the Cowboys always believed they could win as long as No. 12 was under center...because he brought them from behind so many times. His comeback in the 72 playoffs at San Francisco is legendary and twice he almost brought Dallas back from apparent hopeless situations against the Steelers in Super Bowl X and XIII, doing so in remarkably little time against the 70s best defense.
6. Terry Bradshaw: Wild at times, Bradshaw was excellent in four super bowls, winning all and earning the MVP in his last two. Bradshaw brought Pittsburgh from behind in their last three super bowl wins in the 70s, doing so twice in the fourth quarter. He also threw four touchdown passes against a vaunted Cowboys defense in the Super Bowl XXIII, playing against the defending world champions.
5. John Elway: Even before he finally won his two super bowl rings, Elway had established himself as truly clutch, consistently leading average Denver teams to three AFC championships and several playoff wins, often while bringing the Broncos from behind. "The Drive" in Cleveland Stadium in the 86 AFC championship might be the best in NFL history, considering he took the Broncos 98 yards in hostile territory. That's mind-boggling. If the media had been what it is today back then, Graham would make the hoopla surrounding Tom Brady last year seem small.

Tom Brady: Yes, he played below average in the last super bowl, but the bottom line is that had the defense held on the Giants last possession he would have led the Patriots on a last-minute, game-winning super bowl drive for a third time. 14-3 in the playoffs, Brady won his first 10 playoff games and has led the Patriots on five last-minute, game-winning scoring drives in the playoffs when they were either tied or behind. Oh, and Brady has led the Patriots to four wins against either the AFC's or NFL's top seed in the playoffs during his remarkable NFL career. Unflappable under pressure, he's a modern-day Joe Montana.
2. Johnny Unitas: I wish I could have seen this guy play. He revolutionized the quarterback position and was brilliant in pressure situations as he showed when he led the Colts from behind in the final minutes to beat the Giants in overtime in the 1958 NFL championship. Led the Colts to three world titles, was an offensive wizard calling his own plays and struck fear in every defense the Colts played...listen the 68 Jets talk about how scared they were when Unitas came off the bench in Super Bowl III to see what I mean.
1. Joe Montana: Simply put, if my life depends on winning one football game, Montana is the guy I want calling the shots. The bigger the game the better Mr. Clutch was. A master of the 4th-quarter comeback his last-minute game-winning drives against the Cowboys in the 81 NFC championship and against the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII are legendary. Even in defeat the guy was clutch as when he erased a 21-0 fourth-quarter deficit over the heavily favored Redskins in RFK in the 83 NFC championship and would have forced OT had the refs not called two horrendous pass interference penalties on Washington's ensuing drive. At 37 he led the Chiefs back from double-digit deficits in the 93 playoffs against the Steelers and the Oilers (in the Astrodome against a team that had won 11 straight) and guided them to their first AFC title game since 1969. He was straight money.
Notes: I would imagine many would include Brett Favre but he misses the cut in my book because he played really bad in some playoff games and had some horrible interceptions that basically killed his team's chances at winning (2003 vs. Eagles, 2001 vs. Rams when he threw 6 picks, 2007 NFC championship). I love the guy and he was clutch but I like the other 10 better in the clutch for the simple fact you don't know if you're going to get efficient Favre, or wild Favre.

Voters, even in solidly conservative districts, are simply not that scared of Democrats anymore.In the 10+ years when the national Republican party gained and expanded it's hold on the federal government's power structure (1994-2004), just about any Republican candidate could attack just about any Democratic candidate with words like "liberal", "tax-raiser" or any other flimsy GOP buzzwords and expect to bring steadfast conservatives to their side.
That's just not the case anymore.
For the past 3 years, Democrats have been winning tough elections in blood red districts and states all across the country because they want government to work effectively for the people, rather than destroy it from the inside like the Republican party...
UPDATE: In an unparalelled display of spin that falls well outside the confines of reality, the National Republican Congressional Committee has this to say about a Democrat winning a seat in a district that voted for Bush by a margin of 59-41 in 2004:
“This should come as a warning shot to Democrats...The elitist behavior of the Democratic front-runner and the liberal and extremist positions that he and his fellow Democrats in Congress have staked their claim to, do not appear to be as salient as they once hoped.”Ummm. Okay...
