The "Liberal" Media Spins The Polls...
This is a phenomenon I've noticed before, but now it seems to be a tactic to trick Democrats into thinking Kerry can't win.
It goes like this:
If Bush leads buy 3, 4, or 5% in a poll, it is termed as a "solid", "commanding", or "wide/widening" lead.
If Kerry leads by a similar margin, the poll is termed "a dead heat", "too close to call", "statistically tied".
A prime example from DailyKos:
Wisconsin CNN/USA Today Gallup Poll. Registered Voters. 9/9-12. MoE 5%. (8/23-26)
Bush 50 (46)
Kerry 45 (49)
The USA Today headline:
Bush widens Wisconsin lead over Kerry, poll shows
Michigan CNN/USA Today Gallup Poll. Registered Voters. 9/9-12. MoE 5%. (No trend lines.)
Kerry 50
Bush 43
The CNN headline:
Poll: Michigan too close to call
Add to this a chorus of overzealous right-wingers yapping about "panic", "desperation", and "landslide" and you seem to have an open-and-shut case as far as this election goes...
Too bad for them, it's just premature back-slapping in an election that's still far from being decided and still (wait for it.......) too close to call.
