Lowered Expectations...

A few years ago, there was a really funny bit on Saturday Night Live for a phony dating service called "Lowered Expectations". It was a service for ugly, crazy, sometimes volatile singles that didn't have a shot in hell to find a sane, rational partner that didn't look like Luka Brazi (male or female).

With the first presidential debate being tonight at 9pm, the GOP spin-meisters are predictably trying to lower the bar (now hovering about 7 nanometers off the floor) for President Bush.

Bill O'Reilly recently did an interview with Bush, and in summation, he had glowing praise for Bush's heroic courage to submit to an unscripted interview with a partisan Republican hack:

The president did not receive the questions in advance, nor were there any restrictions on what I could ask. Again, that's impressive. Even if you don't support Mr. Bush, you have to admire his willingness to discuss the issues in a venue like this.

O'Reilly's a good little foot soldier, isn't he? This line of reasoning pretty much sums up the GOP's approach to tonight's debate. Call it the "Guinness" effect:

"He's not using a teleprompter and he's using somewhat complete sentences? Brilliant!"

My original prediction for this evening still stands: Even if Kerry runs circles around Bush and leaves him completely dumbfounded, as long as Bush doesn't fart, pick his nose, or drop an "F" bomb, the right-wing shills will declare Bush the greatest debater in the history of the universe...
