RNC Chief: Sorry About Using Race As A Wedge Issue...We'll Stick to Homo-Bashing From Now On...
That's what I got out of Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman's pseudo-apology to the NAACP for Richard Nixon's despicable "southern strategy" in the 1968 presidential election.
"By the '70s and into the '80s and '90s, the Democratic Party solidified its gains in the African American community, and we Republicans did not effectively reach out," Mehlman says in his prepared text. "Some Republicans gave up on winning the African American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization. I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong."Of course Mehlman doesn't need to use race as a wedge issue anymore, nowadays his party can wantonly throw gay people under the bus and get more immediate results in almost every state in the nation.
