Can we all come down from the ledge over the whole Imus debacle?
He's a washed-up hacky shock jock who said something sexist/racist.
He apologized for it and seemed sincere to me, which is more than can be said about Ann Coulter after she called John Edwards a "faggot", and about Bill O'Reilly, who said the female mayor of Virginia Beach "should be baking pies, not running a major city".
He made the mistake of trying to fix the problem by kissing Al Sharpton's ring. BIG mistake.
He deserved to be suspended, he didn't deserve to be fired.
Free speech is free speech, and even though Imus hasn't been threatened with jail time for what he said, it's very creepy to think that your livelihood can be threatened for saying something that you sincerely regret.
Free speech covers speech that you don't like, not just speech you do like, and we all have the right to say something really, really stupid every once in a while...
