We Get the Government We Deserve

George Bush talking about fiscal discipline is in itself an oxymoron. At the same time he vetoes just his fifth bill since his first election (which he won 5-4), Dubya is talking about the bill "lacking fiscal discipline". And he is correct. It's just that he's also a hypocrite. He is simultaneously asking for almost $200 billion in off-budget "emergency" spending for a war we have been fighting for over 4 years now. I am not letting the Democratic Congress off here either. This group came in promising to follow PAYGO. How has that worked out? PAYGO has again become a four-letter word on the Hill. Nobody is REALLY interested in fiscal discipline because it is a really hard sell with voters, most of whom are idiots. Regardless of party. Thus the first likely over-ride of a veto comes about as biparitsan porksters unite to "save the earmarks". Bringing home the pork gets rewarded with votes, fiscal discipline gets rewarded with ouster from office.

We collectively get the government we deserve. As a result, our children will inherit a government burdened by more more and more debt. They deserve better.
