WWII Vet Smacks The Taste Out Of Neil Cavuto's Mouth...

What a breath of fresh air this is...

I was hoping someone would step up and lay to waste President Bush's ludicrous comparisons between Iraq and World War II.

I mean, how classless is it of Bush to use a ceremony commemorating the 60-year anniversary of the end of WWII to try to defend his Iraq mess yet again??? Par for the course, I suppose.

All that being said, this clip of World War II vet Tom Mahoney telling Neil Cavuto why he disagrees with Bush's comparison of the two conflicts and why he opposes the Iraq war is just fantastic...

Fox News' Gibson Says Army Emailer Should Be Arrested For Criticizing Bush...

Freedom of speech kicks ass...

John Gibson was subbing for Bill O'Reilly on his radio show when he let this lovely little example of "supporting the troops" slip out:
Anyway, "Get used to the protest, Gibson." This guy is in the U.S. Army. He writes to me from Tirrenia, Italy, on a U.S. army.mil [email account]. Can you imagine this? "Get used to the protest, Gibson. Americans are finally waking up and seeing the lies and the fallacies of the Bush administration. Fox News has done its best at bird-dogging the Iraq war." This guy is in the Army. Who knows? All right, find him and arrest him. Let's go now to Rick in Palm Bay, Florida.

That John Gibson's a good egg...

FINALLY!!! North Carolina Gets A Lottery...

The state Senate voted today 24-24 with Lt. Governor Beverly Perdue breaking the tie to allow a lottery in North Carolina.

As the last state on the entire East coast without a lottery, it's pretty clear that the people of this state wanted a lottery since Gov. Mike Easley ran almost solely on instituting an education lottery and was overwhelmingly re-elected last year.

With the lottery bill now through the state House and Senate, it now goes to Easley's desk to be signed into law.

All I can say is IT'S ABOUT FREAKING TIME!!!

P.S. If you're morally opposed to a lottery, I can respect that but please don't play it.

Thank you...

UPDATE: Along with the success of PopTheCap, that makes two defeats for the "holier-than-thou" crew in North Carolina. I'm smiling ear-to-ear right now...

2nd UPDATE: A choice quote from Rev. Mark Creech from the Christian Action League I linked above:
"Satan is the great destroyer. His aim is to destroy thousands of families as a result of problems stemming from compulsive gambling. May we continue to diligently pray God would show mercy to our State – that every effort for state-sponsored gambling would be brought to nothing."
Hilarious.

Rev. Creech was so much fun to watch while PopTheCap was being considered, I'm glad to see more of his Doomsday shenanigans on display...

How's Your High School Top 100 Holding Up?

PSoTD got the idea from RoxPopuli, so I'm not even giving sloppy seconds here, more like sloppy fourths...

Go to this page and scroll to the bottom. Take the top 100 songs from the year you graduated high school (1995 for me), then bold the songs you still like, italicize the songs you hate, and underscore your favorite on the list.

A fun little trip down memory lane for all...I'll just do the top 25 for myself...

1. Gangsta's Paradise, Coolio
2. Waterfalls, TLC
3. Creep, TLC
4. Kiss From A Rose, Seal
5. On Bended Knee, Boyz II Men
6. Another Night, Real McCoy
7. Fantasy, Mariah Carey
8. Take A Bow, Madonna
9. Don't Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days), Monica
10. This Is How We Do It, Montell Jordan
11. I Know, Dionne Farris
12. Water Runs Dry, Boyz II Men
13. Freak Like Me, Adina Howard
14. Run-Around, Blues Traveler
15. I Can Love You Like That, All-4-One
16. Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?, Bryan Adams
17. Always, Bon Jovi
18. Boombastic / In The Summertime, Shaggy
19. Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Nicki French
20. You Gotta Be, Des'ree
21. You Are Not Alone, Michael Jackson
22. Hold My Hand, Hootie and The Blowfish
23. One More Chance-Stay With Me, Notorious B.I.G.
24. Here Comes The Hotstepper, Ini Kamoze
25. Candy Rain, Soul For Real

In summary, 1995 was a pathetic year for pop music...

Even Gallup Has Bush At 40%...

Throwback Gear Is Cool...

When my wife and I were at Citizens Bank Park up in Philly last weekend, she was amazed to find out that an official 1976 Mike Schmidt road jersey by Mitchell & Ness costs upwards of $300...

I agree that's steep, but I have to say I'd say it's worth it...

Whether you wear these things or not, what an awesome item to spark up nostalgia!?!

So here's my question: Who's jersey (past or present) would you like to have, regardless of the price?

I'm torn. I can't decide between the 1992 Randall Cunningham Eagles jersey or the 1977 Julius Erving Sixers jersey...

If pressed, I guess I'd go with the Cunningham...

Last Night, I Was 10 Years Old Again...

Isn't it amazing that even after you've been in the working world for over 6 years and have become jaded to so many of the things this crazy world has to offer, that the mere sight of a Hall of Fame baseball player can turn you into a wide-eyed child again?

That's what happened to me at last night's Durham Bulls game.

After the game ended, as I was emerging from my cozy SkyBox (that's how I roll), who should I happen to see walking by, but the immortal Ozzie Smith.

The greatest shortstop to ever play the game...The Wizard Of Oz...13 Gold Gloves...2002 Hall of Fame inductee...15-time All-Star...One of baseball's true "good guys"...

As soon as I caught his eye (not hard to do if you happen to shout "OZZIE!!!" at him, I find), I had a vivid flashback to the opening of "This Week In Baseball" where they showed him doing his back flips. Probably one of my earliest sports memories...

I assume it was fun for him too, being accosted by a lunatic in a blue Phillies jersey on the way to the bathroom, that is...

I got his autograph on my ticket and clutched that thing like a little kid that just found a $20 on the street...Good times...

Killing To Justify The Killings...

Maureen Dowd hits a home run with this synopsis of Bush's latest rationale for never-ending involvement in Iraq...
For political reasons, the president has a history of silence on America's war dead. But he finally mentioned them on Monday because it became politically useful to use them as a rationale for war - now that all the other rationales have gone up in smoke.

"We owe them something," he told veterans in Salt Lake City (even though his administration tried to shortchange the veterans agency by $1.5 billion). "We will finish the task that they gave their lives for."

What twisted logic: with no W.M.D., no link to 9/11 and no democracy, now we have to keep killing people and have our kids killed because so many of our kids have been killed already? Talk about a vicious circle: the killing keeps justifying itself.

"Man of God" Calls For Assassination Of World Leader...

Judging by that headline, you might assume that I'm referring to a fundamentalist Islamic terrorist leader (you know, like the guys that attacked us on 9/11 and are still free men?) issuing yet another condemnation of a Western leader.

Well, you'd be wrong...

This time, it's America's own Pat Robertson issuing the "fatwa". Being the upstanding, peace-loving Christian he is, Robertson feels that now is the time to kill Venezuela's president, Hugo Chavez before he causes the U.S. any grief.

Why does he feel so strongly? It's pretty much about OIL...
You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war. And I don't think any oil shipments will stop. But this man is a terrific danger and the United ... This is in our sphere of influence, so we can't let this happen. We have the Monroe Doctrine, we have other doctrines that we have announced. And without question, this is a dangerous enemy to our south, controlling a huge pool of oil, that could hurt us very badly. We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.
You could change about 10 words in that statement and it would read just like any other anti-American tirade launched by Osama bin Laden or any of his putrid underlings.

But, as he and so many other Christian extremists so often do, Robertson will walk away from this comment pretty much unscathed.

Why should Robertson get a pass yet again?

Why is Robertson considered a moral beacon in a nation as great as the United States? Are our standards really that low?

Why does a man who happily did business with an actual dictator like Charles Taylor of Liberia get to decide which world leaders are beneath the U.S.'s contempt?

UPDATE: To further investigate the similarities between Muslim extremists and Christian extremists, treat yourselves to this fun little quiz...

SurveyUSA Ranks All 100 Senators...Guess Who's #100...

You got it! Lil' Ricky Santorum (sometimes) from the great state of Pennsylvania is officially our nation's least-liked Senator with a staggering net approval of -4% (42% approval, 46% disapproval).

The rest of the survey bodes pretty well for Democrats hoping to gain seats in the Senate.

As PoliticalWire points out, 4 of the 5 lowest-rated incumbents up for re-election in 2006 are Republicans:

Rick Santorum (Pennsylvania): Pretty much on his way to losing huge time to Bob Casey, Jr. next year, Santorum now has to deal with a primary challenge from a non-lunatic Republican...

Mike DeWine (Ohio): As I've mentioned before, the corruption in the Ohio GOP is dragging down DeWine. Also facing a GOP primary challenge, DeWine is looking worse by the day. Now, if only a strong Democrat would pleeeeeeeeease step up...

Conrad Burns (Montana): His ties to uber-scumbag lobbyist Jack Abramoff are coming back to haunt him in a state that is sick of political bullshit. The newly rejuvenated Montana Democratic Party is ready with a strong candidate in State Senate President Jon Tester.

Jim Talent (Missouri): In a state that is increasingly Republican-weary, the already weakened Talent must really be sweating now that it looks like Claire McCaskill, who narrowly lost the governor's race in 2004, will be taking him on...

A Quick Note To EVERYBODY...

It is NOT OK for you to walk around with atrocious body odor.

It just isn't...

If you have access to soap and a shower, you should never walk into a place of business smelling like you just hosed down the killing floor of a slaughterhouse...

Moreover, if you DO smell like wet ass, you'd better NEVER pull your chair up next to me for ANY period of time without expecting a size 10 broken off in your filthy colon...

Good day to you...

Another GOP Governor Gets Busted...

It's official: Gov. Bob Taft will go down in history as the first Ohio governor to be charged with a crime while in office. Taft has allegedly been taking gifts illegally ever since he took office.

In that sense, he's not unlike our president, who's the first to ever enter office with a criminal record.

What is it with GOP governors getting caught with their greedy little paws in the cookie jar?

On the upside, the rampant corruption in the Ohio Republican Party should make it much easier to take out this guy next year. Now if some Democrat would sack up and take him on...

P.S. Isn't it uncanny how much Taft looks like his great-grandfather, former President/Chief Justice William Howard Taft? A little slimmer, though...

Dubya Sinks Even Deeper Across The Country...

SurveyUSA is back again with presidential approval ratings for all 50 states.

You might recall that they did this back in June. At that point, Bush carried a positive rating in only 17 states.

The new data shows Dubya with a positive rating in only 7 states, an even rating in 2 states, and a negative rating in a whopping 41 states.

Using the analysis I put together back in June, I'd like to update a couple of points:

In those ten states, Democrats must get good candidates into the field next year.

They've already done this in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, but if they can't recruit viable candidates in those other seven states (especially Ohio, where Mike DeWine will face a tough GOP primary opponent), then they deserve to be a minority party for a long time...

UPDATE: MyDD has a fascinating breakdown of an interesting phenomenon in the SurveyUSA poll. In all 50 states, independents' views of Bush more closely align with Democrats than with those of Republicans.

Every...single...state...

Spineless NC GOP Congressman May Face Tough Challenge...

"I am flat-out, completely, horizontally opposed to CAFTA."
--Rep. Robin Hayes (R-NC) Charlotte Observer, July 25, 2005

4 days later, after having his spindly arm twisted by a GOP leadership that could give two shits about working people, Robin Hayes VOTED FOR CAFTA and helped it pass by a 2-vote margin.

Enter Tim Dunn, an Iraq war veteran who was incensed by Hayes' blatant flip-flop and is looking to hold him accountable next year.

It's looking more and more likely that next year could be a real be-otch for North Carolina's GOP Congressional delegation.

Good...

The Rise Of The Anti-Military Right?

It doesn't sound crazy if you're actually paying attention, but there is a pervasive attitude among much of the conservative establishment that doesn't mind shitting on the military when it serves it's purposes, yellow ribbon stickers made in China notwithstanding...

Digby has a laundry list of recent GOP attacks on veterans (purple heart band-aids, "pukes", etc...) that seem like ample evidence of a growing resentment of the military on the right...

Digby misses a couple of salient points, though. First is the fact that Democrats have fought over the past several years to increase funding to the VA, while Republicans have allowed the VA's financial troubles to foment. Once the heat got too great, the GOP swooped in to add to the budget and take all the credit.

Second, even the formerly respectable Rudy Giuliani gladly stepped up last October to throw the troops under the bus (and cover Bush's ass) when a shitload of explosives went missing in Iraq.

It seems that a substantial (and influential) sect of the GOP (no, it's not the whole party) has a pretty well-defined charge for the American military:

Fight and die for us. Give Bush his photo-ops. Don't complain about it, and definitely don't run for office as a Democrat when you get home...

UPDATE: The beat goes on. Last night, at the site of Cindy Sheehan's protest in Crawford, a pickup truck plowed over white crosses meant to comemmorate soldiers that have died in Iraq. Very respectful...

Katherine Harris Shakes Her Tits All Over Fox News...

Not an articulate headline by any means, but once you watch this hilarious clip from last night's Hannity & Colmes, you'll probably want me nominated for a Pulitzer.

Fresh from officially announcing her campaign to lose to Sen. Bill Nelson (D) in next year's Florida Senate race, Katherine Harris (of 2000 Election theft fame) went on H&C to talk about her "ideas".

What she wound up doing was an impression of a Miss USA pageant contestant fresh off a caffeine and cigarette bender that just got asked to extrapolate pi to 20 decimal places...

Alan Colmes seems genuinely mystified by the situation. You really have to wonder if that guy has ever actually seen a breast that didn't have a crease, a staple or a page number through it...

P.S. I know all of my male conservative readers will take up for the Human Halloween Mask and say that she's really hot like they do whenever Ann Coulter or Michelle Malkin is discussed, but come on guys.

If that's what you wanna roll with, at least try to do better...

"That's typical for that fatass drug addict to come up with something like that."

Paul Hackett is firing back at Kid Oxycontin for questioning his service as a Marine in Iraq.

On the Ed Schultz show, Hackett got off a bunch of beautiful broadsides on Rush and the modern Republican party for being "patriotic-lite".

Take a listen.

The really good stuff starts about 2 minutes in...

Feeling Uncreative On A Rainy Tuesday...

So, I thought I'd post a great comment I read over at Stinging Nettle by a poster named Stevelaw. This excellent post deals with the idea of "intelligent design" (i.e. creationism) being taught in public schools.

I think it's more accurate to say that ID does not belong in a science class because it ISN'T A SCIENCE. It isn't a scientific theory, it isn't a branch of science, and it has no relevance any form of scientific study.

Science is the process of finding explanations for natural phenomena by gathering empirical data to support those explanations (also known as theories or hypotheses). ID does not rely on empirical data of any sort to prove a hypothesis. In fact, it does exactly the opposite. ID declares that there is no need to gather ANY data about natural phenomena because the explanation or theory that supports it is not a scientific but a supernatural one.

So what it comes down to is:

Evolution = scientific theory subject to verification by gathering empirical evidence

Intelligent Design = unverifiable supernatural explanation for natural phenomena.

So what is this debate about, really?

Very well said...

$64/Barrel???: Oil Hits New Record High...

As opposed to the record highs from last month or the month before that...

Luckily, President Bush is on the case. He will be signing into law about $14.5 BILLION of corporate welfare for the poor cash-strapped oil companies that are seeing their profits go through the roof and still can't seem to make ends meet.

That takes resolve...

The "Douchebag Of Liberty" Overflows...

Man, I love it when I come in and something this good is waiting for me...

Bob Novak (the guy who actually outed Valerie Plame, but magically has escaped the investigation into whodunnit) couldn't take some ribbing from James Carville, so he said "bullshit" on live TV and ran off the set.

Bob Novak: Yet another conservative that talks a big tough game about morality, but loses his cool and runs as soon as someone calls him on the garbage flowing from his yap.

Watch the whole video, it's just good fun...

P.S. CNN has suspended Novak indefinitely for his little hissy fit.

Cheers To The Folks At PopTheCap...

Thanks to their efforts, new beer styles containing up to 15% ABV will become legal in North Carolina in about 10 days.

The state Senate voted yesterday by a margin of 27-21 to give final approval to the "Pop The Cap" bill. The bill will become law in 10 days unless Gov. Mike Easley signs it before then. A veto is highly unlikely...

Thanks to PopTheCap, North Carolina is no longer saddled with the dubious distinction of being one of 6 states (sorry WV, AL, MS, AR, and SC!) to place a limit of 6% ABV on beers served.

Sean Wilson and Julie Bradford have done a great job in pressing for this piece of legislation, as have all the supporters of PopTheCap.

Drop them a line to thank them for their efforts.

P.S. The News & Observer has the full story...

To All The Haters: I Got Your Answers Right Here...

On Paul Hackett:

A loss is a loss, but a Democrat came within 4% of winning a seat that went GOP in 2004 by a margin of 44%.

The Ohio GOP is in deep shit, beginning with their scumbag governor. If Sherrod Brown decides to challenge Mike DeWine for his Senate seat next year, the GOP will really be in trouble...

On the AFL-CIO split:

It's not a great sign, but in a time when conservative/corporate forces are squeezing the labor movement from all angles, a little creative thinking and a change in strategy is actually a good thing.

Conservatives have been calling the end of labor movement years, and it's not happening. The more workers realize that unionizing can protect their jobs, their benefits, their families and their futures, the better.

Conservatives hate that. "Fuck the little guy, the big dog's gotta eat!"

I like the new direction. I think it will make unions on both sides of the issue sharpen their games...

On everything else:

I'm out and about all afternoon, so I'll clear my plate right now:

Konichiwa, bitches!

UPDATE: One more tidbit: Bush is heading for the longest Presidential vacation in 36 years. Nothing says "regular guy" to me like a month-long vacation!

Limbaugh Calls Iraq War Vet "Staff Puke"...

Honor the troops, until they come home and run for elected office as a Democrat.

Rush is claiming that Paul Hackett (candidate for Congress in Ohio's 2nd district) is a "staff puke" because he was a civil affairs officer in Iraq. Someone should remind him that two of these "staff pukes" died last October thanks to an IED in Iraq...

It sounds funny coming from a guy who got a deferment out of Vietnam because he had a cyst on his asshole...

Sounds like somebody's feeling nervous about the results of today's special election...

Why Are So Many Ballplayers Such Lying Assholes???
"I have never used steroids. Period."
--Rafael Palmiero, testifying before Congress (3/18/2005)
"I have never intentionally used steroids. Never. Ever. Period."
--Rafael Palmiero, in a prepared statement today, after receiving a 10-game suspension for steriod use.

All I can say is FUCK THIS GUY!!! This asshole must have learned how to parse his words from his former boss...

How bad off are you when a braindead dipshit like Jose Canseco makes you look like a complete lowlife??? Next time, I hope Raffy will stick with his "little blue miracles"...

Palmiero and Mark McGwire should both be barred from the Hall Of Fame...No questions asked...PERIOD.

P.S. How great is this little nugget?

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said President Bush considers Palmeiro
"a friend and he believes him" when he says he never intentionally took steroids.

Jean Schmidt: The Human GOP Talking Point...

Watch her crazy ass on Hardball.

My favorite part of the interview (about 2 1/2 minutes in) is when Ms. Schmidt claims she's just as qualified to talk about Iraq as her opponent, Paul Hackett (a veteran of the Iraq war), because she just came back from a soldier's funeral.

The woman is a living, breathing talking point machine. It's really extraordinary to watch...

Thanks, CrooksAndLiars...

Oh, and be sure to give Paul Hackett some consideration, and maybe some cash...

Bush To Recess Appoint Known Liar Bolton...

So Senate Democrats (and Republican George Voinovich) get the goods on John Bolton and hold up his nomination because he's a (oh, what's the word) scuzzbucket.

As a result, President Bush feels the need to flex his dwindling lame-duck muscles and recess appoint Bolton to the United Nations.

Check out this letter sent to Bush from Senate Democrats taking Bolton to task for supposedly "forgetting" he had been interviewed by the State Department's Inspector General during the investigation into Bush's claim about uranium being sought by Iraq.

Way to go, George. Use what's left of your power to give a free ride to a guy who's a bigger asshole than you are...
